As soon as I made it so task manager overrides anything else on screen, I could kill the game, and continue using my PC without a restart. Most of the time, it's a well-known crash or freeze that occurs due to the game's own engine or poor optimization, and in the past, the only reason I had to hard reset was because the frozen screen would stay over the task manager, preventing me from even killing the program. Also, I don't get random freezes in games just because.

So, if you are getting a freeze of any type, it could be inside your pc somewhere and nothing to do with software (besides triggering it). I ditch that damn cpu and replace with the exact same one (i7 3770) and problem is completely gone and the pc still working even today. So I hard restart the pc and back at 8 lanes. I can still swing my weapon, hear the jump mechanic and footsteps ect. 'ok there's something wrong with this computer' I play a game (I think it was Bloody Spell) and five minutes in my screen just stops and I can hear the game still. So I reinstall cpu and now we are at 16 lanes.

It kept changing how many pcie lanes too. You can still hear your game running and hear the inputs being made, but screen is frozen on last image! That one turned out to be a faulty cpu. The temperature spike would happen so fast that it wouldn't display in metrics overlay. It was my old FX 9590 that had an issue with cooling system all along. Whenever it felt like being a pest, really. Then freeze at desktop or maybe during boot. I used a pc that froze before and it was overheating. On the rare occasion a game causes a freeze up, once again, a hard reset fixes it.

It also only STRICTLY happens with Avast. My PC can and does become slow for example when Windows Updates or Steam is downloading something (my OS is on an HDD, not SSD), but certainly never unresponsive or breaking the desktop and windows explorer.

And while yes, Avast is pretty garbage as far as antivirus is concerned, the free version never gave me these problems (probably cause it didn't have to update all the shields that are limited to the Premium version). I've had games freeze my PC, requiring either a hard restart or if I'm able to access the desktop or task manager, I either restart the PC or kill the offending program. I mean, freezes can happen, especially due to software. Usually a cpu will do this if it's unstable (I'm looking at you AMD FX). On another note I feel like it's not Avast causing the freeze.
